Last week I read Romeo Romeo, written by Robin Kaye. It is a fast-paced, entertaining read that I enjoyed immensely, and think you will, too. With all the hoopla over the announcement of the Golden Heart finalists, I think it's interesting that Romeo Romeo won first place in the Golden Heart in the single title category back in 2007. It was published in 2008 and from what I can tell from Ms. Kaye's website, http://www.robinkayewrites.com/ it is her first published book. I can honestly say that if this is the caliber of manuscript that wins the Golden Heart, mine didn't deserve to final. (At least as it was at the time I submitted it.)
So there you go. Slowly but surely I am finding new authors to follow (as I've read most everything out there from my favorites). Ms. Kaye has two other books out, Breakfast in Bed and Too Hot to Handle, that I plan to pick up on my next trip to Borders.

ReplyDeleteI'm glad you enjoyed Romeo, Romeo and thanks for the compliment. :) I'm sorry you didn't final but that doesn't mean your manuscript isn't final worthy. I have a friend that entered two of her books in the GH, one year they had horrible scores, the next year, one finaled and this year she just finaled again. Sometimes I think it's the luck of the draw. You have to have the right judge or the right editor read your work. Still, you're not going to win if you don't enter, your not going to sell if you don't submit. So keep entering, keep writing, and keep submitting.
I'm off to write the beginning of my next book. I just finished the revisions for Yours For the Taking, which will be out in Jan. 2011.

ReplyDeleteAside from Carly Phillips and Kathryn Taylor, I don't read contemporaries too much -- unless they've got a paranormal flavor. Just seems harder for me to suspend disbelief a lot of times. Recently uploaded a free download from Harlequin and wanted to break the computer screen (since I could not throw the book at a wall) almost immediately. Totally ridiculous premise: High-powered financial consultant heroine asks her wealthy client (with whom she has only a professional business relationship) to father a baby for her, no strings attached. And as if that wasn't inane enough, she wants him not just to supply the, er, wherewithal, but to join her for a procreation vacation in the Caribbean. Yeah. Okay. Sure. Right.
ReplyDeleteNot all contemporaries are as bad as the one you downloaded, but there are some out there. Just like I'm sure there are some paranormals that don't measure up. I wouldn't read the book you described either. Maybe you should stick to contemporary books recommended by others....Like Romeo, Romeo!!!!
